- According to the DIY Network : Caulking around doors, windows, pipes, cables and vents can save up to 10% in heating and cooling costs. I am working over this weekend on sealing cracks, crevices, doors, and windows. I bought this old house last year and did nothing and my bills were too high!
I am going to work hard at getting this old lady ready for the winter properly this year!
GE Caulk Singles are my friend along with some handy tape!
I plan on insulating my old wooden windows too. I cannot afford to replace them for another year so I am working hard to seal em up and make it tight! Does anyone know of a good and affordable bulk kit for a whole home?
I want to get a service call for my furnace and have a programmable computerized setback thermostat installed.
I have a lot of work ahead of me, but I really want to be better this winter than I was last year. I plan on the whole family wearing sweaters and wool socks. We are going to learn to live a few degrees below our normal zone this year. Money is tight and we must learn to adapt. I am hoping all of my DIY improvements can help a lot! What are you planning on doing? Brrr. I can almost feel the chilly air.
So I must go now and look into my Fall/Winter clothing bins and find my cutest wool sweaters and socks.

I was living in upstate NY last winter in a home built in 1894, that possessed no insulation and no windows that sealed. What I did was get the window shrink-wrap for all my windows. It helped a tonne. No more 20 below drafts creeping through the cracks, and it only took me a couple hours to put it on all the windows.
